NB-IoT(Narrow band Internet of Things) is an emerging technology in the field of the Internet of Things. It supports the cellular data connection of low-power devices in the wide area network, and is an important direction of the future development of the Internet of Things. However, Internet of Things manufacturers are also faced with many challenges during the deployment. They have more demanding requirements on product size, power consumption, network coverage quality, information security, etc., and expect more stable performance and continuous integration of GNSS and other functions.

In order to meet market demand, STMicroelectronics has introduced ultra-compact low-power Internet of Things module ST87M01, which integrates highly reliable and robust NB-IoT data communication with precise and flexible GNSS geographical positioning functions. It is an ideal device for designing Internet of Things and asset tracking devices. The fully programmable, industrial-grade module is LTE Cat NB2 NB-IoT certified to cover the global cellular mobile network communications spectrum and integrates advanced security features.

Product characteristics

1.Precise GNSS

As one of the world's first iot cellular mobile network access chips to comply with the latest mobile communication standard 3GPP Version 15, the ST87M01 has greater multi-area LTE network coverage. The highly integrated native GNSS receiver provides connectivity to multiple navigation satellite systems, enabling more powerful and accurate positioning while improving power savings while sleeping in the NB-IoT.

2.Ultra-compact

The module itself and all internal ics are completely designed, developed and industrialised by ST. Therefore, ST can fully control and manage the material cost and supply chain. This product is unique in the market in terms of product quality, safety and service life. The module comes in a 10.6mm x 12.8mm LGA package, ideal for small size applications.

3.Low power consumption

The ST87M01 has passed certification tests in the industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C), with low power mode operating current less than 2µA and maximum transmitted output power up to +23 DBM. It is suitable for a variety of iot devices requiring reliable low power wide area network (LPWAN) connection. It includes smart meters, smart grids, smart buildings, smart cities and smart infrastructure, as well as industrial condition monitoring and factory automation, smart agriculture and environmental monitoring. It also applies to tracking and positioning of pets, children, the elderly, remote worker safety monitoring, equipment asset tracking such as power tools and general intelligent logistics.

4.More flexible

ST87M01 is a fully programmable iot platform that brings design flexibility to product developers, allowing users to implement simple application scenarios simply by embedding their code directly into the module. The module can also be paired with a separate master microcontroller to implement many more complex use cases. To help developers design popular iot use cases, stmicroelectronics offers a variety of protocol stacks, including IPv6, TCP/UDP, CoAP/LWM2M, MQTT, HTTP/HTTPS, and TLS/DTLS. In addition, the ST87M01 supports the standardized 3GPP AT command, as well as the enhanced AT command from stmicroelectronics.

5.Safer

The module also integrates advanced ST4SIM Embedded SIM (eSIM) cards. The eSIM card has been certified to the latest industry standards, such as the recent GSMA eSA (Security Assurance) certification, further reducing the size of the device and improving security. Advanced Embedded Security Unit (eSE) is also built into the module.

The ST87M01 can be used with a variety of stmicroelectronics technology products, including microcontrollers, AI solutions, sensors, actuators, PMUs, converters, interfaces, memory and other connectivity technologies to enable the next generation of iot ecosystems.
