Novel thermopile based detector for CO2 sensors

Technology Cover
Post-datum: 2022-01-27, Renesas Electronics America

Renesas Electronics has expanded its environmental sensor portfolio with its first thermothermopile based detector family featuring integrated filters for optical (NDIR) CO2 sensors. Four new single - and dual-channel analog detectors for CO2 gas achieve what is claimed TO be the industry's best performance, quality and life in the TO-5 package, making them ideal for applications requiring high reliability, high accuracy and operation at high temperatures for use in a mix of industrial, medical and Internet of Things.

The device is high-temperature certified and supports applications operating in an extended temperature range up to 125C. These new detectors provide fast response times with time constants ranging from 18 ms to 25 ms and high signal-to-noise ratios ranging from 1,981 to 4,953 to ensure the precision required for mission-critical applications that must have high reliability.

Customers can combine CO2 sensors based on new detectors with Renesas electronic sensors such as the ZMOD4410 IAQ platform and/or its HS3001 high-performance, high-precision relative humidity and temperature sensor with embedded AI and IP67 grade package options. Together with its MCU, this combination enables customers to produce complete environmental sensing solutions for medical or industrial applications. And the new thermopile based detector complements the company's current line of environmental sensors for air quality monitoring.

Uwe Guenther, Senior Director, Sensing Solutions, IoT and Infrastructure Business Unit at Renesas said :"As more people spend more time indoors during current events, many home, healthcare,  educational and work environments are adopting HVAC systems and devices with increasingly sensitive detection  capabilities to ensure healthy CO2 levels." " Renesas's new family of thermal-based detectors supports the development  of high-performance CO2 sensors,  enabling manufacturers of HVAC systems and other medical and industrial applications to meet changing CO2 detection  needs at an affordable price. Provides real-time feedback for these mission-critical applications while maintaining high  accuracy and reliability."
