Smart OLED controller for automotive applications

Technology Cover
Post-datum: 2022-02-23, Melexis Technologies NV

Melexis has developed a smart OLED controller that can drive 25 leds/OLeds per MLX81130 and supports Melexis MeLiBu interface. It provides simpler static and dynamic lighting system development. It is particularly suitable for RCL or small OLED displays. It combines all the active components needed to enable point-LED and face-based OLED lighting applications inside and outside the vehicle.

Manufactured to support ASIL B system integration, the device comes in a QFN 5x5 package with 25 programmable constant current sources. It was created to work in a single-master, multi-slave configuration. And highly integrated smart controllers allow leds and OLeds to be driven by a single device.

"Lighting applications are becoming more complex. Manufacturers are starting to use OLED technology. Due to its smaller size, it offers greater uniformity, efficiency and design possibilities, "commented Michael Bender, Product Line Manager, MyCHIP Embedded Lighting. "Along with its high-speed communications interface, MeLiBu, the MLX81130 leads the way in supporting OLED and LED capabilities, enabling automakers to implement value-added external lighting functions in a more cost-effective manner."

Using LEDS with OLeds typically requires two types of drivers, including two controllers and possibly two complete subsystems that are not easy to integrate and can be understood by automotive engineers. Each device can drive up to 25 individual leds or 8 RGB leds while supporting the wide threshold range required for OLED. The device overcomes this problem by being able to drive independent programmable outputs of leds and OLeds. It was created to support a multi-slave configuration, which means that the total number of leds/OLeds that can be controlled by one master is virtually unlimited.

The output current can be programmed between 0mA and 15mA for 1mA steps, and then 2mA steps for each output of 30mA to respond to market demands. Each constant current output is managed by an integrated 16-bit MLX16 FX pipeline microcontroller, supported by a 32-bit math coprocessor and 32KB Flash. Two watchdog timers with separate clocks and a 10-bit ADC are also provided. The output can be controlled by PWM. For more output current, multiple device outputs can be bridged.
