Melexis has introduced the MLX90377 single - and dual-mode (fully redundant) three-axis position sensor for automotive and industrial applications in a new PCB-free position sensor package.

The device is a magnetic rotation and linear position sensor IC, which is developed on the basis of the successful development of the MLX90371 and MLX90372 triaxial sensors. Based on the Triaxis Hall magnetic front end, it combines the ADC with signal conditioning, DSP, and output stage drivers that support SPC (Short PWM Code), Ratio - ometric Analog, PWM, and SENT signal formats. As other members of the three-axis position sensor range, it can be used for rotary and linear motion position sensing applications. Its robust stray field mode, ASIL-C(single-mode) capability and external pin measurement make it ideal for high performance and safety-critical applications.

New package options include SMP-3 and SMP-4(single die package, 3 and 4 pin) for PCB-free designs. Like the DMP-4, the first PCB-free package released in 2012, these new packages are designed to be used without a PCB, reducing the overall cost of the system and improving mechanical integration and reliability. These new package profiles are smaller than current DMP-4 packages and provide better mechanical integration and quality by optimizing the package body and electrical wiring, representing nearly a decade of continuous improvement based on customer feedback and application knowledge. The SMP-3 is a single-mode solution and will be supported first by the MLX90377, while the SMP-4 provides a dual-mode solution (shared power and ground pins) that will be supported first by the previously released MLX90371.

“Melexis is using its domain expertise to develop new solutions, continuously improving and expanding its product offering,” said Nick Czarnecki, Marketing Manager at Melexis. “The MLX90377 offers better performance and adds SPC functionality and is currently used in Multi-bus architectures such as advanced steering and braking applications. The new packaging options are a perfect example of Melexis listening to customers and working with partners to improve quality and reduce costs.”
